Construction Begins on 36th St Pedestrian BridgeCrews are starting construction on a new bike and pedestrian bridge spanning the Boise River that will provide a vital link for Greenbelt users and a safe route to school for local children.
The 12-foot-wide bridge will feature a concrete deck and oxidized steel beams. The bridge is a cooperative project between the City of Boise and Garden City. Garden City received an American Recovery Reinvestment Act federal stimulus grant totaling $550,000 to fund the bridge construction.
The City of Boise provided funds for design and construction of the bike path connection to the bridge. The bridge construction and the grant will be administered through the Idaho Department of Transportation.
Guho Corporation is the contractor. In July, crews began preparing for installation of the bridge. For the first phase, a temporary Greenbelt detour route will be constructed on the north side of the river and several trees will be removed. Replacement trees will be planted later this fall in several local parks.
Garden City has prepared a map of alternate routes on the south side of the river.
After initial prep work, crews will begin to build bridge abutments, which will create some noise disturbance for neighbors during construction hours. After the concrete is poured, the abutments will cure until the bridge is put in place in September.
Located downstream of the site for the Ray Neef MD River Recreation Park, the pedestrian bridge will provide access to Quinn’s Pond and the future Esther Simplot Park, enhance alternative transportation and encourage development in the Live, Work, Create neighborhood, home to the Waterfront and Alley Arts Districts.
